Badges and levels
Collect badges for what you do in the app, earn XP for it, and climb through twenty levels, each marked on your profile.
Your badges
Tap Menu, then Profile, then Badges. Each kind of badge appears once, in alphabetical order, showing the highest number you have reached. Each badge has a frame in a colour that shows how far up that kind you have climbed, from bronze up to ruby, and a row of dots under the number, one for bronze up to seven for ruby, so the colour is never the only sign. A badge appears once you have earned it; before that you will not see it. Tap a badge to see the highest one of its kind you have reached and what it is for, including its colour and the day you earned it.
With no signal, Badges shows the badges it last loaded.
What earns a badge
- Stays, and stays in each nation (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland): your 1st, 5th, 10th, 20th, 50th, 100th and 200th stay.
- Places added, Photos added, Questions answered and Notes written: the same numbers, 1 to 200. A place or photo counts once a moderator approves it, and a note once its post is shown to others.
- Membership: 1, 3 and 6 months, then 1, 2, 3 and 5 years.
- Favourites: 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50.
A stay counts once a little time has passed since the visit, and a note once its post has been shown, so their badges arrive a few days later.
Kept for good
A badge is yours for good. If you later delete a photo, remove a favourite or a post is taken down, the badges you earned stay.
When you earn one
The app tells you the next time you open it: a notification, and a message at the bottom of the screen. Tap View to see your badges. After your first badge, the app asks once whether to send notifications; tap Allow to get them.
If your profile is shown to others, they see your badges and the day you earned each one, apart from your favourites badges.
XP
What you do in the app earns XP, once it counts:
- a place you added, once a moderator approves it: 50;
- an edit of yours that is approved: 15;
- each photo of yours put on a place: 10;
- each question you answer: 2;
- each note, once its post is shown to others: 5;
- each stay, and each time you report you couldn't stay, once a little time has passed since the visit: 10;
- reporting that a place has closed: 5;
- each badge you earn: 20 for the first badge of a kind, 40 for the second, and so on up its ladder.
Favourites and searches earn nothing. If something that earned XP is later deleted or declined, such as a place that is removed, a visit report you delete, or a post that is taken down, the XP it earned is taken back. The XP a badge earned stays, as the badge does; so does the XP of an edit or a closure report.
Your XP total is shown only to you, on your profile and under XP on Stats.
Levels
Your XP total sets your level, from 1 to 20:
- Newcomer, from 0 XP
- Wanderer, from 100
- Explorer, from 250
- Pathfinder, from 500
- Navigator, from 1,000
- Trailblazer, from 2,000
- Ranger, from 3,500
- Pioneer, from 5,500
- Voyager, from 8,000
- Overlander, from 12,000
- Nomad, from 16,000
- Veteran, from 20,500
- Guide, from 25,500
- Surveyor, from 31,000
- Cartographer, from 37,000
- Waymaker, from 43,500
- Globetrotter, from 50,500
- Luminary, from 58,000
- Sage, from 66,000
- Legend, from 75,000
Your level is shown as a row of five marks that fill in from the left as you climb: five stars, then five compasses, five mountains, five rosettes. One star is level 1 and five stars level 5; one compass is level 6, and so on, up to five rosettes at level 20.
Find it at the top of Profile, under your photo, with a bar showing how far you are towards the next level. If your profile is shown to others, they see your level under your name, never your XP total. If XP is taken back, your level can go down.
When you reach a new level, the app tells you with a message at the bottom of the screen the next time it checks, with any new badges.
