Using the app without signal
RoamOver keeps the places you have looked at on your phone, so you can still find them with no signal.
What is kept
When you are logged in, the app keeps:
- every place you have seen on the map or opened, as it was when you last saw it;
- the photos you looked at;
- your filters, saved filters and settings, and your favourites if you have a subscription;
- a new place you were part way through adding.
Places you have looked at stay on your phone until you clear them, the storage limit needs the space, or you log out.
With no signal
The map shows the places kept for the area you are looking at, and a message says Offline — showing saved stopovers, with how long ago they were updated. Your filters still work. When you have signal again, tap Retry or move the map.
The map picture itself may not show once the app has been closed, but the places you kept still do. Posts are not kept, so a place's Recent activity says Not available offline. A photo you never loaded shows a plain picture instead.
The storage limit
- Tap Menu, the three lines at the bottom right of the map, then App Settings.
- Tap Offline maps and storage to see what RoamOver keeps on the phone.
- Tap Storage limit to choose how much space it may use.
When the limit is reached, photos go first, then the maps you looked at longest ago, then the places.
Clearing what is kept
On the same screen, Clear offline maps, Clear photos and Clear saved stopovers each clear one kind of data, and Clear all offline data clears all three. You stay logged in, and your settings and any favourites are kept. Logging out removes everything the app kept on the phone.
What needs signal
- Searching for a town, city, postcode or place, which is part of a subscription.
- Areas you have never looked at: the map says Offline — no saved stopovers here.
- Sending anything: a new place, a suggested edit, photos, ratings, posts and reports, and saving a favourite. Nothing waits to be sent later, but a new place you are adding is kept as a draft.
- Your posts and submissions, and what other people have said about a place.
